SmoothZap protects mail servers and users by blocking spam and email viruses at the network perimeter, so that dangerous and unwanted email does not get through to user inboxes and vulnerable mail servers.

Anti-Spam		SmoothZap incorporates Mailshell spam detection software, which independent tests have shown to block as much 99% of spam email. The multi-engine detection system analyses email on the basis of its content, sender reputation, whether it was sent in bulk and any unusual formatting which is characteristic of spam. Automatic update of the detection signatures every five minutes provides quick reaction to emerging spam outbreaks. In addition to Mailshell, SmoothZap employs several other techniques to eliminate spam from both SMTP and POP3 email. A transparent POP3 proxy captures any personal email as well as business email.
Anti-Virus		SmoothZap scans all incoming POP3 and SMTP email and outgoing SMTP email for viruses. Viruses are blocked at the network perimeter, on the firewall, rather than on the mail servers and user PCs that are their targets. SmoothZap incorporates both POP3 and SMTP transparent proxies, so you don't have to reconfigure mail servers and PC mail clients. Transparent mode operation provides protection against viruses entering the network via personal email accounts. The well respected Clam-AV engine is used by SmoothZap and there are no subscription charges for virus signature updates.
Mail Relay		Ideally any server accessible from the Internet should be isolated from other systems in a De-Militarized Zone (DMZ). However, in the real world this can prove awkward, as in the case of Microsoft Small Business Server where users need to access its files and shared calendars etc. Using SmoothZap as a mail relay provides a layer of isolation between any mail server and the Internet, with no directly open ports between the two. All SMTP or POP3 email traffic is reconstructed by SmoothZap before onward transmission to the actual mail server, thus protecting it from attack from, for example, malformed SMTP email.
Reporting		More than twenty charts and reports provide complete awareness of email activity. From high level statistics covering email usage, spam and viruses removed, down to per user/mailbox information, SmoothZap tracks the fate of each and every email. Spam and virus levels are recorded and analyzed as percentages of overall email, showing the effectiveness of SmoothZap email security and the potential savings to the organization.
Email Archiving		SmoothZap can automatically BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) both incoming and outgoing email so that an archive of all email is kept. For some organizations this may be required by corporate governance laws. This optional feature is configurable by domain or by the sender/recipient email address.
